Comprehensive Assessments
Your care at Eastern Sky Wellness begins with a comprehensive health history and psychiatric assessment. A primary goal is to obtain a holistic understanding of your health status, identify any potential health risks or problems, and develop a personalized plan of care to help promote your overall mental health and well-being.
By gathering detailed information about your mental and physical health, lifestyle (such as sleep, nutrition, and exercise habits) and preferences, I can offer tailored recommendations for preventive care, mental health maintenance, and symptom management. This proactive approach not only helps in early detection and treatment of health issues but also empowers you to take an active role in managing your health and making informed decisions about your care. Ultimately, a comprehensive health assessment serves as a foundation for building a trusting relationship, leading to improved psychiatric health outcomes and quality of life.
Medication Management
Psychiatric medication can play an important role in achieving or maintaining mental health. Understanding and accepting that medication might be needed is a big step and clients will be supported in that decision at Eastern Sky Wellness. Whether you’ve never taken psychiatric medication before, are on existing medication that might need changing, or are wanting to try coming off medication — ESW is here to help. Education about medication benefits and limitations will be discussed in an open and honest manner.
Medication can help many conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar, and ADHD. They are best viewed as tools in your wellness toolkit, to use along with other coping strategies. For many people medications do the “heavy lifting” and can enable you to better use your existing coping skills.
Sometimes cannabis has a place for wellness, but for many individuals it can create a stumbling block and worsen mental health. If you have questions about how it may or may not be serving you, please ask.
ESW offers psychotropic medication genetic testing through a company called GeneSight. This is a simple at-home DNA test that will look at how your genes may affect medication efficacy. It can serve as a blueprint for selecting medications based on your genes, and recommends which medications might be better tolerated along with dosing guidelines. Insurance often covers the cost with regular a copay.
Counseling and CBT-I
Eastern Sky Wellness offers brief supportive therapy as part of medication visits. Supportive therapy aims to help clients feel understood, respected, and not judged. It involves listening, exploring feelings, and validating or normalizing those feelings. It does not involve intensive psychotherapy or delving into the past. It is more about the here and now, about what is showing up in your life today — the good or not so good — and allows you a safe space to share.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a non-medication option for treating insomnia. CBT-I is a psychotherapy treatment that helps people with insomnia improve their sleep by addressing the thoughts and behaviors that cause or worsen their sleep problems. CBT-I is the first-line recommended treatment for insomnia — even before medication — by the National Institute of Health, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and others. It can reduce reliance on or help a person come off sleep medication entirely. CBT-I is designed to be completed in 6 weeks through one hour weekly sessions. Insurance covers CBT-I.
Julia Gallant PMHNP completed training for CBT-I through Dr. Gregg Jacobs’s course. Dr. Jacobs is a pioneer in CBT-I and developed his program through Harvard Medical School. He is the author of the groundbreaking book “Say Goodnight To Insomnia”.
